Charter Captains deliver outstanding yacht charter experiences by combining expert sailing skills with local knowledge to create personalized guest itineraries. They are professional, independent problem-solvers supported by a strong base team. Captains typically spend two to three weeks per month on charter and assist with base operations or special charters when not on the water.
This is a full-time position. Local candidates are preferred, and accommodation is provided. Days off will be scheduled around charters.
What you will be doing:
Ensure the safety of the clients, the crew, and the yacht throughout the charter. It is the captain’s responsibility to ensure the boat leaves and returns to the dock without incident.
Be responsible for the safe piloting, navigation, anchoring, and operation of the yacht always during charter.
Keep an updated logbook recording hours, passages and mileage of charters.
Adhere to the company quality checking procedure, including but not limited to:
Checking all mechanical and electrical equipment is in prper working condition prior to departure from the dock. e.g. engine, bilge pump, anchor windlass, refrigeration, etc.
Ensuring all safety equipment is nboard and safely stored, that fire extinguishers and flares expiry dates have not passed, that all life jackets are in good condition and can be located quickly, and that the life-raft is visually inspected. All safety equipment must meet the required standards and regulations of the yachts port of registration.
Ensure the yacht has been fueled and that the water tanks are full.
A check f the yacht sails and rigging.
Check that the dinghy is clean, and n a condition that meets the company standards.
Ensure the yacht is clean and tidy ready fr guest arrival.
The captain is expected to handle basic technical issues as they arise during charter. The customers should be shielded from any issues with the yacht wherever possible, and communication should remain professional and appropriate. The captain should take steps to recover the situation when technical problems occur and should liaise with the base in a timely manner when major or specialist support is required.
Greeting clients and assist with boarding, followed by a welcome brief covering safety and relevant yacht information, including the whereabouts of all safety equipment.
Act as a host for the charter party, organizing activities and excursions as required, and providing local information throughout the charter.
Provide basic instruction for snorkeling, kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding.
Clean the yacht during the charter to keep it to a high standard including daily washdowns of the decks.
Report any incidents during charter to the supervisor, initially verbally and followed by a written report, whilst following the incident reporting process.
Upon completion of the charter the captain should leave the yacht in a clean and tidy state ensuring that all trash and linen have been removed from the yacht and that the water tanks are refilled.
The captain should complete a de-briefing upon completion of charter – covering any remaining defects with the yacht in conjunction with the base technical team.
When not on charter you will be allocated base duties, including briefing/customer service/technical work/ drive chase boat/carry out chase call duties and anything else deemed suitable.
For any period where charter volumes are low, base work will be expected for this full length of time.
Any other duties as directed by the Operations Manager.
The ideal candidate will have the following:
Boatmaster’s License for local applicants. RYA Yacht Master Offshore Commercially endorsed will also be accepted, or equivalent
Valid STCW
Valid medical check (ENG1 or equivalent)
Previous experience as a captain on similar sized yachts is desirable
Able to swim and being competent in the water
High level of awareness of the importance of safety when responsible for clients, crew, and the vessel.
Customer service experience with the ability to communicate with clients at all levels and in a professional manner
Basic technical experience on similar sized yachts and systems – willingness and ability to fix issues as they arise during charter
Experience managing guests in and around a tender in a safe and controlled manner
Verbal and written communication skills
Flexible and can-do attitude
